Green Smoothies – So Good For You

Green smoothies are just so good for you. Leafy greens are absolutely packed with stuff that is really good for you. They are a great source of calcium, magnesium and Vitamin C. Green smoothies also contain carotenoids that have been proven to help protect against macular degeneration and foliate to guard against diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

You cannot release the nutrients of leafy greens just by simply chewing them because when fresh, whole foods are taken down to the cellular level by your smoothie maker, the nutrients become readily available to nourish your body. High speed mixing creates green smoothies quickly, keeping oxidation to a minimum.

This means you will need the best blender for making smoothies, buy the best one you can afford. The speed and power is so important when making smoothies. The speed in which smoothies are made helps to keep them fresh and the power helps to blend them quickly.

Green smoothies are easy to digest. When blended well, most of the cells in the greens and fruits are ruptured, making the valuable nutrients easy for the body to assimilate. Green smoothies literally start to get absorbed in your mouth.

As opposed to juices, green smoothies are a complete food because they still have fibre. Consuming fibre is important to our bodies as fibre collects debris and toxins and then passes through our bodies

Health Benefits

Diabetes

A healthy diet, based around fresh vegetables and whole grains can help to prevent and/or reverse diabetes in three important ways:

  • Body weight and fat are reduced naturally to healthy levels.
  • Blood sugar levels remain level throughout the day.
  • The body is receiving the nutrition it needs in a steady stream throughout the day. This reduces cravings that can cause spikes in blood sugar.

Fruit Juice is usually off limits to diabetics because it contains too much sugar (10% the same amount found in lemonade). However, green smoothies made purely from leafy greens are allowed. The fibre metabolises the natural sugar in our body, so there is no rush or spike in sugar levels.

Cancer

Standard Treatments

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is toxic to our bodies and does not discriminate between cancer cells and healthy cells.  Unfortunately, this means they damage both types of cells and often cause serious and debilitating side effects, which can force patients to abandon treatment. These treatments can also destroy a cancer patient’s already fragile immune system. Chemotherapy and radiation therapies will never fix the original underlying cause of the cancer, often making patients sicker and usually decreases quality of life. Therefore, it is not surprising that many cancer patients now opt to complement conventional treatments with alternative therapies.

Natural Cancer treatments do three things:

  • Safely get rid of cancer cells by gently killing the cancer cells.
  • Shake up and correct the internal environment on which the cancer cells thrive, which in turn makes the body hostile to cancer cells.
  • Strengthen the immune system and remove toxins.

A healthy, high fibre diet (consisting of fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, greens, herbs, whole grains, superfoods etc.) can greatly lower your chances of getting a debilitating disease like cancer. If you believe that prevention is better than cure, a green smoothie is the best way to build up your immune system to help prevent diseases like cancer.

Heart Disease

Prevention

Although there is no ‘magic’ food to decrease the risk of developing heart disease, your diet does play a massive part in prevention or management of heart problems. Recent evidence suggests that plant foods such as vegetables, wholegrain cereals and nuts decrease the risk of heart disease.

The Best Protectors

Vegetables

Antioxidants in vegetables offer protection against heart disease. Vegetables are important sources of folate, this helps lower the blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine, which appears to be linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

Nuts and Seeds

Raw nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients. They contain lignans, bioflavonoids, minerals, and other antioxidants that protect the fragile freshness of the fats therein; they also contain plant proteins and plant sterols that naturally lower cholesterol.

Vitamin E

Recent studies indicate that vitamin e acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect against ‘bad’ cholesterol. Good sources of vitamin e include avocados, dark green vegetables, vegetable oils and wholegrain products. It is better to eat foods containing vitamin e rather than take supplements, which do not have the same protective effects.

In conclusion

Not everyone likes every green vegetable but the beauty of green smoothies is you can mix and match and only add the ingredients that you like. You can buy fibre powder to add to your smoothies for an extra boost and for a different flavour you could add natural, flavoured juices to your smoothies as a base instead of water. Experiment with flavours until you find the smoothie that suits your taste.

The only thing that isn’t in question is how good green smoothies are for you, they not only have an effect on your health but mood and give you a general sense of well-being. Go on, make one, what have you got to lose?
